Project overview
We rehabilitated more than 3 miles of pavement, replacing broken panels and grinding the surface to eliminate ruts worn by decades of vehicles. In addition, we replaced expansion joints on four bridges. This project was combined with another rehabilitation project on I-90 to reduce costs.
What to expect
Work is complete.
The section of I-5 was built in the mid-1960s. More than 50 years of traffic have worn the pavement. The expansion joints are worn at four bridges – a section of I-5 north of 41st Street as well as the overpasses at US 2, and Pacific and Hewitt avenues. Replacing them during scheduled closures allows people who travel to plan ahead. If the old joints break, we need to close lanes and do emergency repairs whenever it happens, even if it’s a peak travel time. We need overnight lane reductions to complete this work.
