US 101/Northwest US 101 – Remove Fish Barriers

Expect temporary traffic signals and around-the-clock alternating traffic near Wisen Creek Road between Forks and Lake Crescent through fall.

From Monday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 29, travelers will also see daytime single-lane alternating traffic about two miles south of the Jefferson/Clallam county line.

What to expect

Travelers can expect temporary traffic signals and single-lane alternating traffic around the clock on US 101 in Clallam County. The work zone is located near Wisen Creek Road east of Forks. The speed limit is reduced to 25 mph between mileposts 208.8 and 209.88.

Crews are building a new bridge on eastbound US 101. The westbound bridge and work at four other sites associated with this project were completed in fall 2024.

History and background

State highways cross rivers and streams in thousands of locations throughout Washington.

Some crossings can impede fish migration.

Since 1991, WSDOT has worked to improve fish passage and foster healthy waterways. This is done by removing barriers that keep fish and other aquatic species from moving under the state highway.

Since 2013, WSDOT has worked to follow the requirements of a U.S. District Court injunction to correct barriers to salmon and steelhead.

Travelers will also see two new work zones south of Forks and Ruby Beach and an existing work zone at the Jefferson-Clallam county line. All four work zones will have temporary traffic lights and one-way alternating traffic.

North arrow points up. — In 2024, crews completed construction at four locations in Jefferson County. Work will resume at Site 1: Wisen Creek to Sol Duc River in summer 2025.

These culverts part of a larger effort in Grays Harbor, Jefferson and Clallam Counties. The work will remove 29 barriers to fish under state highways.

A separate project at the Jefferson-Clallam county line began in March 2024 to replace a culvert under US 101 at May Creek.
