US 12 and SR 7 - Intersection Improvements

Project overview

The Lewis County intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and State Route 7 in Morton is a three-way intersection with both routes serving as critical corridors for businesses, residents, Mt. Rainer National Park tourism and freight traffic.

Due to a trend of serious crashes at the intersection, the intersection was identified as an Intersection Analysis Location. This means priority was given to study the intersection because of the safety concerns regarding the crash history at this location, to see if a roundabout could help reduce the number and severity of crashes. The study looked at crash types and seriousness of the crashes, the space available to make improvements, number of vehicles using the intersection, and how drivers are moving through the intersection.

For this study, the Washington State Department of Transportation reached out to the nearby community looking for input to inform the design of the future intersection. Information was gathered on how people use the intersection, the types of vehicles they use and other general feedback. Based on the information gathered, the study confirmed that a single-lane roundabout would meet the goal of improving safety at this intersection. Based on this study, design of the roundabout will begin in the Spring of 2025 with construction planned for the Summer of 2026.

Design and construction of this roundabout will be funded by the I-2 Collision Prevention: Intersection System Safety improvement program. This program funds the installation of roundabouts that reduce crash types resulting in serious injuries and property damage, such as those that frequently occur at the SR 7 leg of the intersection, and which can be constructed within the existing space available.
