Map location for the future Children of the Sun Trail.

WSDOT recognized the need to take a multi-modal approach toward providing transportation choices; that is why the North Spokane Corridor (NSC) was and is being designed as a multi-modal facility that will support alternative transportation options rather than just a traditional highway project. The NSC was designed to provide several Park and Ride lots, and the “Children of the Sun Trail” a pedestrian/bicycle trail that parallels the full length of the corridor.

The contractor is in the final stages of design for the Children of the Sun Trail. There will be several design features and connection points that will incorporate a sense of place. Currently, the trail ends at Columbia Avenue with the trail extending as far north as the Wandermere access point.

There will be four specific community connection points along the route at Market Street and Euclid Avenue, Market Street and Garland Avenue, Market Street and Wellesley Avenue, around the Hillyard Historic Business District, and at Market Street and Columbia Avenue.

Each focus area will have a design feature unique to the neighborhood. Elements include light features, path connections, seating, kiosks, and feature walls with unique designs. The purpose to create a sense of place with the neighborhood and community feature.
