Planning study news
The State Route 3 Craig to Arcadia pre-design is underway. WSDOT is collecting information and will work with local partners and the community to gather feedback as part of this pre-design. The pre-design is expected to finish by March 2026.
Purpose
WSDOT routinely reviews the state highway system. We look for locations that are at the highest risk for severe crashes and then explore ways to reduce the likelihood of crashes. As a result of the review, we plan to replace the existing intersections on SR 3 at Craig Road, Mill Creek Road, and Arcadia Road with roundabouts. We will also manage the ability of cars to make left turns. The pre-design will also look at and recommend Complete Streets improvements.
Target Zero is WSDOT’s safety improvement program. It aims to reduce serious and fatal crashes on state highways. The program focuses on two aspects: crash reduction and crash prevention.
Complete Streets are streets designed for everyone. WSDOT uses Complete Streets to create safer and more accessible roadways for all users. To do this, Complete Streets looks at several elements. This includes:
- Level of traffic stress
- Connectivity
- Route directness
- A safe system approach
Studies show that roundabouts are safer than traffic signals or stop signs. They accommodate vehicles of various sizes, including:
- Emergency vehicles
- Buses
- Bicycles
- Semi-trucks with trailers
- Farm and logging equipment
