Planning study news
Thank you for participating in the SR 7 Pre-design. The pre-design in complete, and the project will move to a design office. Since summer of 2024, WSDOT has held advisory group meetings, in-person events, and an online open house.
Purpose
WSDOT has an upcoming safety improvement project on State Route 7 between SR 507 and 267th Street. The project will also repave the roadway. This pre-design identified Complete Streets improvements for everyone traveling along SR 7.
Survey results showed support for active transportation facilities, improved lighting, and new crossings of SR 7. You can read more about the community engagement process (PDF 1.1MB) and results (PDF 2.3MB).
Recommended improvements will become part of the safety project. The pre-design also identified improvements for future projects along SR 7.
Key elements of the pre-design include:
- Focus on safe travel.
- Improve accessibility and comfort for people walking, rolling, biking and taking transit.
- Identify potential impacts to overburdened and vulnerable populations.
- Maintain access to the corridor for businesses, transit and freight.
Two SR 7 paving projects that were to be funded through WSDOT's Preservation Program were screened for Complete Streets and included in the SR 7 Pre-design.
As a result of underfunding in the Preservation Program, WSDOT paused the two SR 7 paving projects. They were not included in this SR 7 Pre-design.
The SR 7 Pre-design moved forward with a safety improvement project on SR 7/Mountain Highway East from just south of 267th Street East to the SR 507 intersection in Pierce County.
When we look at Complete Streets, we look for improvements that will benefit all road users.
During this pre-design, WSDOT conducted an environmental justice assessment (EJA). In an EJA, we work to ensure full and fair participation in the decision-making process. This means including those who are more likely to be affected by any decisions made.
