Northbound SR 529 will be closed at the Steamboat Slough Bridge, 24 hours a day, from 11 p.m. Friday, May 2, to 11 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, for mechanical work on the bridge. People will be able to use northbound SR 529 to go to Smith Island, but will need to leave the island via southbound SR 529. Vehicles over 11 feet tall need to exit at 28th Place Northeast because there is a low clearance bridge at 40th Place Northeast, the only other northbound SR 529 exit before Steamboat Slough.
Project overview
Corrosion from weather is damaging the Snohomish River Bridge and Steamboat Slough Bridge. Beginning in 2023, crews working for WSDOT have been rehabilitating the northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge between Everett and Marysville by repairing or replacing steel truss elements, substructure elements, sway frames, timber sidewalks, cleaning and painting metal surfaces, and mechanical and electrical rehabilitation. Crews will also perform rehabilitation work to the SR 529 Steamboat Slough Bridges in both directions to ensure the end lift upper wheels work properly and the movable span is balanced.
What to expect
SR 529 travelers can expect lane reductions on the northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge through spring 2025. Also, some southbound SR 529 weekend-long closures are possible at Steamboat Slough Bridge; if these occur traffic will be diverted to southbound I-5. Local access to tribal lands will be open.
This project includes work on the northbound Snohomish River Bridge and both directions on the Steamboat Slough Bridges.
